Day Trip Adventures

Check out these great day trips — the Clearwater Valley and surrounding wilderness put world-class outdoor adventures right at your doorstep.

Idaho's Outdoor Playground

Elk Springs Villa sits in the heart of the Clearwater River Valley — one of Idaho's most spectacular outdoor destinations. Whether you're a seasoned hunter tracking elk through old-growth timber, a fly fisherman chasing legendary Clearwater steelhead, or a family looking to float the river on a lazy summer afternoon, there's an adventure here for everyone. And at the end of every day, the villa's hot tub, sauna, and fireplaces are waiting.

Hunting & Wildlife

The forests and meadows surrounding Kamiah are prime hunting ground. The Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests begin practically at the doorstep of the villa.

Big Game Hunting

The Idaho Panhandle is renowned for Rocky Mountain elk, white-tail deer, black bear, and wild turkey. Millions of acres of public land in the Clearwater and Nez Perce National Forests provide exceptional access for hunters of all experience levels. Archery season typically opens in late August, with rifle season running through November.

World-Class Fishing

The Clearwater River is one of the premier fisheries in the Pacific Northwest, famous for its legendary Chinook salmon and steelhead runs. Spring Chinook arrive April through June, while fall steelhead fishing peaks September through November. Rainbow trout and smallmouth bass round out the season. Local outfitters offer guided half-day and full-day trips.

Dworshak Dam & Reservoir

One of the most impressive engineering feats in the American West — and just a short drive from the villa. Dworshak Dam stands 717 feet tall, making it the tallest straight-axis concrete dam in the Western Hemisphere.

The Dam & Visitor Center

Free guided tours of the dam facilities are offered seasonally (May–September). Walk the dam crest, learn the history of its construction, and look out over the 54-mile reservoir stretching north into the wilderness. The adjacent Dworshak National Fish Hatchery is one of the world's largest steelhead hatcheries and is open for self-guided tours.

Boating & Water Sports

Dworshak Reservoir's 2,000 miles of undeveloped shoreline make it one of Idaho's best kept secrets for boating and water recreation. Launch your boat from Dworshak State Park and explore hidden coves, swim off the dock, or kayak the calm upper arms of the reservoir. Fishing for kokanee salmon, smallmouth bass, and rainbow trout is excellent throughout the season.

Dworshak State Park

Located on the south end of the reservoir, Dworshak State Park offers camping, picnic areas, swimming beaches, and boat launches. It's the perfect base camp for a full day on the water. The park operates May through September — reserve early in summer as sites fill quickly on weekends.

On the Water

River Floating & Whitewater Rafting

The Clearwater River flows right through the Kamiah valley — calm and gentle in the lower stretches, wild and powerful in the upper canyon. Two very different river experiences, both within easy reach.

  • Clearwater River Floating — Ideal for families. Grab a tube, kayak, or inflatable raft and drift the calm stretches through the valley. Multiple put-in points near Kamiah. Best June through August.
  • Lochsa River Rafting — About 1 hour from the villa, the Lochsa is nationally ranked for Class III–IV whitewater. Spring snowmelt (May–June) brings the highest flows. Several licensed outfitters run guided full-day trips from Lowell, ID.
  • Swimming Holes — Local knowledge goes a long way here. Ask at the villa for directions to the best spots along the North Fork Clearwater.

Berry Picking & Hiking

Slow down and discover the quieter side of the Idaho wilderness — picking wild huckleberries in alpine meadows or exploring miles of forest trails above the Clearwater Valley.

Huckleberry Picking

Idaho's legendary wild huckleberries are the Pacific Northwest's most prized berry — sweet, intense, and unlike anything you'll find in a grocery store. The mountains above Kamiah come into season late July through September, with the best picking typically found at elevations above 4,000 feet in forest clearings and burned areas. Bring gallon buckets and make huckleberry pie, jam, or smoothies back at the villa.

Season: late July – September, elevation-dependent

Hiking the Clearwater

The Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests offer hundreds of miles of hiking trails ranging from easy riverside walks to strenuous ridge-line climbs with sweeping views of the Clearwater River Canyon. Wildlife is abundant — keep your eyes open for bald eagles, osprey, deer, moose, and the occasional black bear. Spring and fall offer the best wildflower displays and cooler temperatures for longer treks.
